Research background

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide developed in the 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, designed as a fragment of ACTH(4-10) — but stripped of ACTH's hormonal activity, meaning it doesn't stimulate cortisol release. What remains is a neurotrophic signaling effect: research shows Semax increases BDNF gene expression in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, activating downstream pathways (MAPK/ERK, PI3K/Akt) linked to neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity. In rodent cognitive-testing models, it has improved performance on object-recognition and maze tasks, and separate research has examined its effects on amyloid aggregation — an active area of neurodegeneration research.
